An art form with an over 1,000 year history, tattooing is slowly losing the rebellion stigma that it previously held, with roughly one in five Americans now claiming one. Through changing social norms powered in part by the online era and a new generation of tattoo consumers, the art form is slowly gaining acknowledgement within fine-art communities. Partnering with local Minneapolis tattoo artists Lindsee Boyer of Bee Ink and Nate Vincent Szklarski of Saint Sabrina’s, Gamut Gallery presents Spit Shade, an exhibit of original artwork created by tattoo artists.

The initial idea for Spit Shade was to create an exhibition space reminiscent of a tattoo shop waiting area covered with flash designs. While affinity for those classic designs is in some ways a prerequisite for this line of work, most tattoo artists find their way into tattooing through an early interest in the arts and continue their individual art practice outside the shop. As planning progressed, the curators decided to broaden the scope of the exhibit and encourage tattoo artists to explore other media and inspirations. As stated by Nate, “as a tattooer I know that I love to create body art for people, but at the end of the day nothing feels more passionate than putting down the machine and picking up a brush and creating something that ultimately is mine from start to finish.” While many of the artworks exhibited will retain the spirit of tattoo art, the organizers are excited to see what experiments and innovations will be created.

Spit Shade provides an opportunity to not only bring the robust and varied Minnesota tattoo community together, but also to include artists from other states who will be coming to town for the annual Minneapolis Tattoo Arts Convention. Opening night of the exhibit will double as the official opening party for the convention and will feature DJ No Pants, playing music from the likes of the Kinks and other 1960’s, & 70’s bands & hip-hop hits from the 90’s

A holiday sale in a gallery setting, Gamut Gallery provides a fun-filled, consumer-conscious alternative to chain stores and mass mall shopping with the annual shopping event Raging Art On. Described as an “art-happening meets holiday party meets pop-up boutique,” an “uncurated” art experience awaits the adventurous shopper on the hunt for the perfect gift for the artist, musician, writer or other creative maker on their holiday season shopping list. We’ve hand-selected the 50 local artists involved, but they decide what to show and where to show it. What results is a gallery packed from floor to ceiling with paintings, photos, prints, collectibles, handmade apparel, jewelry, housewares, and more.

Raging Art On reflects Gamut Gallery’s ethos of community, collaboration, the art of the happening and eco-consciousness. Gifts for sale at this event are handmade locally and are in harmony with the values of those concerned by mainstream holiday effects on our environment and our world — landfills, factory and shipping-caused pollution, issues of outsourcing and fair trade, consumer culture, etc. Raging Art On offers a place to join like-minded people together through art, music, performance and conversation.

In A Gallery Far, Far Away… presents a celebration of Star Wars, paying homage to the franchise while including a variety of artists from different backgrounds working in various media, showcasing that Star Wars is not defined by George Lucas or Disney, but belongs to the fans. This exhibit will be on display for three days only with free viewing during our regular weekly hours (Thur-Sat 1-7pm), and will culminate with a proper party Saturday, December 16th, 7-11pm ($5 entry or free with gallery membership). The party will feature a live orchestral performance of the Star Wars theme song in addition to other inspired improvisations by Adam Conrad’s Improvestra. The Headspace Collective will bring us back to the times of the original Star Wars release by spinning late 70’s era disco, and Andy Fitton will contribute a space-inspired ambient DJ set to the festivities. Star Wars costumes are strongly encouraged.

 

Whether you love it or hate it, Star Wars has been an influence on your life. Marking its 40th anniversary this year, spanning a multitude of media and connecting generations, the Star Wars franchise is pervasive to modern life. Even if you haven’t seen the films, countless musicians, artists, filmmakers and more have been shaped by the Star Wars-verse, the extensive range of products that have helped bring “nerd” culture into the mainstream. The eighth installment, Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens December 15th, and Gamut’s original crew members Mark Dean and Kurtis “Kujo” Johnson thought it fitting to present a Minneapolis artists’ ode to Star Wars: In A Gallery Far, Far Away…

 

ABOUT THE CURATORS: The two curators came to Star Wars in different ways; Dean a die-hard fan from childhood, and Kujo more recently found affinity by watching the series with his son. The concept behind the exhibit is driven by Star Wars fandom. The curators are even planning to recreate a child’s bedroom, complete with posters, comics, and action figures. The exhibit was invitational at first, but as word spread about the show, Dean and Kujo decided to put out a call for submissions, recognizing that there are so many unique styles pushing the envelope in exciting and innovative ways. The artists were asked not only to think about the impact of Star Wars on their lives, but also to think about the larger galaxy and cosmos to gain inspiration for their works. Not limited to branded franchise imagery, artists were encouraged to explore Star Wars world phenomenon, inspiring a wide variety of works that collectively create an environment rich in imagination.

As in past years, the call for art is open to all visual media. The selected works for C4W: 2017 reflect that inclusive approach and include video, installation, sculpture, photography, fiber, drawing, and painting. While there is no predetermined theme in the submission guidelines, the guest curator brings their own unique perspective and interpretation to the submitted works. This personalized stamp brings forward an underlying style that visually and conceptually connects the works in the exhibition. Coleman’s curatorial aesthetic has developed a show of bold colorful creation, favoring strong linework and figurative representation.

 

C4W: 2017 includes both artists familiar to Gamut as well as many newcomers, creating a diverse group of eclectic styles. A notable difference for this year’s exhibit is the quantity included; Coleman wanted to include as much artwork as possible, selecting a total of 64 works. Of the 48 featured artists, only 13 have previously shown at Gamut, leaving roughly 70% of the exhibiting artists new to the gallery. CL Martin, Christopher Palbicki, Benjamin Sagmoe, Natalia Berglund, Shye, Christopher Sorenson, and Russ White are among the familiar names. Exciting newcomers include Scott Roper, whose surreal acrylic paintings are so expertly done they appear computer generated at first glance; Jeremy Jones, creating large-scale sculptures that reference domestic life as a father; and Jennifer Chilstrom, co-owner of local boutique Showroom and fashion brand Kindred Folk.

About the Curator: Joel Coleman has been immersed in the local art scene with his tenure as the proprietor and curator of The Abstracted Art Gallery (2012-2014), and was familiar with the vast majority of local submissions. Currently, Coleman serves as a Made Here Arts Advisory Panel member, involved in the curation and installation of artwork in vacant downtown Minneapolis storefronts in partnership with the Hennepin Theater Trust.

Celebrate Gamut Gallery’s thriving community at our inaugural Members Gala! Set amidst the eclectic background of our annual C4W show curated this year by Joel Coleman, the evening will feature various musical performances by The Nunnery, Maksha, and our “House Band” for the night: local producer heavyweights Bionik, Chuck Love, and James Patrick. Stone sculptor Benjamin Sagmoe will be live carving in the back courtyard, which will be transformed along with the inside of the gallery for the special occasion. This formal black-tie event – where we will literally roll out the red carpet – is members-only but all are welcome to become members of the gallery, either in store or online on our Membership page.

Over the past 5 years, Gamut Gallery has collaborated with artists, curators and performers to deliver thought-provoking art programming to the Twin Cities and engage our audience on a visual, visceral, and emotional level. We have made a name for ourselves locally as the edgy accessible gallery, showing a wide array of media, content and styles from artists emerging to established, with an inclusive approach and intention to create space for conversations inspired by the artwork. This summer we launched a membership program to build on those conversations and strengthen our community of patrons and collectors. Beyond supporting the local art scene, members receive free admission to all exhibition openings and closings as well as invitations and discounted tickets to preview parties, such as early access to our annual Raging Art On holiday market. Please join us for a respectful and constructive conversation about gun violence with law enforcement, community leaders, and exhibiting artists – set amidst the exhibition “Art Is My Weapon: MN.” This exhibit finale will be this Friday, October 27th, from 7-9pm, with the formal discussion beginning at 8pm.

Pillsbury United Communities (PUC) presents the local exhibit “Art Is My Weapon” at Gamut Gallery. In August 2016, PUC – in collaboration with the City of Minneapolis and the Minneapolis Police Department – conducted a gun buyback to remove guns from the street with no questions asked. They collected up to 250 guns that were decommissioned and disseminated to locally recognized artists to use as raw materials in their art.

Painters, glass artists, sculptors, photographers, poets, and other artists used the decommissioned firearms to make works of art that address the issues of guns and gun violence in America. Each artist used the guns in their medium to express a thought, make a statement, open a discussion and stimulate thinking about guns in our culture.

Inspired by the national traveling exhibition, “Guns In The Hands of Artists” produced by Jonathan Ferrara Gallery, “Art Is My Weapon” is an outgrowth of that project that came to the Twin Cities in the summer of 2016. “Guns In the Hands of Artists” was first organized in New Orleans in the mid 1990s by artist Brian Borrello and Jonathan Ferrara to create a conversation about guns and gun violence in our society by bringing the conversation in the realm of art as the language for dialogue.

Join us Saturday, October 7th for a spiritual yoga session and guided meditation with Ayurvedic Yoga therapist Shelby Blaisdell.

Staying active within the art world as an art figure model, Shelby is excited to be working within Morgan Pease’s new series #MASK, approaching yoga from a spiritual side and moving away form form, moving from creative reality into alternate reality.

Pease’s current work explores the chaotic impulsivity of the masking technique. Dubbed Mask due to its dualistic meaning, this series explores a visual representation of human insecurities, examining the divisive masks we wear in day-to-day life and the vulnerability of peeling away layers to reveal what is truly underneath.

Join us for the exhibit finale of #MASK, a solo show of new works from Morgan Pease. An artist talk will begin at 6pm, moderated by close friend and fellow artist Russ White.

The night will also feature a set from James Patrick, a sound artist who thrives on bringing together the creative energy and ideas of his community. Through collaboration and experimentation, he creates immersive environments that explore the evolving definitions of sound art. His record label and events are both heavily supported by some of the greatest names in electronic music, and his personal recordings continue to make waves in the international electronic music circuit.

Pillsbury United Communities presents the local exhibit “Art Is My Weapon” at Gamut Gallery. Keeping in line with the eclectic array of media and artists participating in our current exhibit, Sq2 [Squared], curator Cassie Garner hand-selected a series of performers for the finale who reflect the entire gamut of performance art. For this event, a variety of artists will perform within a 10′ x 10′ square, harnessing their ability to adapt within the confines of limited space.

With a Vinyl DJ set from exhibit artist Booka B (aka Adam Bucher) who is a native to the Twin Cities and has been DJing and producing since the mid 90’s. In 2005 he released his mostly instrumental album Basementality, and in 2007, with MC and beat box artist Carnage, released the album Sense Of Sound. As a producer, Booka B has worked with a host of artists including Slug, Eyedea & Abilities, P.O.S., Toki Wright, Desdamona, Heiruspecs, Michael Lewis, Anomaly, and Jeremy Ylvisaker. In addition to making music and holding down a few weekly DJ residencies, Booka B teaches audio technology and painting at Creative Arts High School in St Paul.

Around 9pm Nicholas Knutson (also exhibiting in Sq2) will kick off the performances by bringing to life a character infamous in his performance art videos; followed by Sonja Johanson’s “Spoons” movement piece based on Christine Miserandino’s Spoon Theory. Revel in stunningly innovative freestyle from dancer bzychln, modern dance interpretive choreography from Patrick’s Cabaret fave, Arturo Miles, and soulful expressive dance from Rikyrah Snow. Enjoy stand-up poetry from spoken word legend and Access to Art series host, Tom Cassidy, and hilarious storytelling from writer, performer and columnist Thadra Sheridan. The evening will close with live stand-up comedy featuring loop pedals and reverb from Latinx comedian Xochi de la Luna and non traditional Slovakian music by Simon Chama.

Gamut crew members Kujo Johnson and Bobby Kahn will take the stage to host as their alter egos “Barb” and “Allen.” Not to be missed! Come early to snag standing space and browse the 10″x10″ artworks that make up Sq2!

FEATURING new work from Morgan Pease

For his first solo show in Minneapolis, artist Morgan Pease debuts an exhibition of textured depth. A departure from his previous body of work which relied heavily on structure and solid rules, Pease’s current work explores the chaotic impulsivity of the masking technique. Dubbed Mask due to its dualistic meaning, this series explores a visual representation of human insecurities, examining the divisive masks we wear in day-to-day life and the vulnerability of peeling away layers to reveal what is truly underneath.

Using a fractal imagery process that he’s been mastering for over a decade, Pease builds up layers of paint, and seals them with a gloss, resin or poly providing a contrast to the white matte color above. Working with nearly all recycled materials and custom building all of the panels and drop-in frames, Pease is hands-on during every part of the process in his art, creating pieces ranging in size from 6’’x6’’ to 4’x8’.

What started as an escapism for the “monotony” and repetitive nature of his past work, this series was birthed out of a desire simply to add color and texture to the base of his artwork. Far from simply whitewashing a color scheme, Pease creates unpredictable bursts of experimentation in the form of vivid hues peeking through in a playful nature. By adapting a new paint application process that is unstructured, more free-flowing and organic, Pease is forced to address his emotional response to his work, destroying his own masked misconceptions and insecurities surrounding the need to control and embracing chaos.
